Importance of Developing Hobbies in Children

I would rather die of passion than of boredom
Vincent Van Gogh

Hobbies are great distractions from the worries and troubles that plague daily living, as said by Bill Malone. Moreover, for children hobbies are not just a deviation from routine tasks but something that helps in several aspects of their development. Hence, inculcating in and polishing the interests and hobbies is as important as their academics. If you take a sneak peek in to the life of eminent people like artists, sportsmen etc you can see that it was their hobbies which acted as the stairs upwards for them in their life.
Let’s see some of the reasons why generating hobbies is this important.

  • Hobbies act as the best way to keep the ever evolving and inquisitive mind of a child engaged.
  • Hobbies while keeping them engaged, active and happy, also develops will power and self esteem in them.
  • In the highly competitive and fast paced world, hobbies helps make a person acquire a distinguished personality.
  • Hobbies imbibe those unique skills that make a child outstanding among many and also grab him the opportunities to compete with similarly skilled children and develops in them the quest to work hard and win prizes. This in turn gives the child confidence and self esteem.
  • Hobbies strengthen the children’s communication and social skills and also bring the hidden talents in them in front of the world.
  • Hobbies help kids harness many skills and it might also eventually become a road to a successful career in future.
  • Hobbies relieve stress. You might wonder whether kids have stress. Off course they do. Even the little minions are under a lot of pressure of their studies, deprivation of the presence of parents and care of grandparents etc. Hobbies immerse them in a different world of imagination, skills and inner joy.
  • Hobbies maintain mental well being. It triggers good mood and refresh their brains. This also helps children improve their concentration and observing ability.
  • Hobbies like listening to stories gradually become reading habit and they start loving books and the world of words. They slowly learn to imagine and create their own stories and weave their own tales. They become creative and learn new vocabulary, improve their language and might even become passionate writers. At least they become good in language skills and develop an interest in reading which expand their knowledge. Also, the stories and poems impart qualities like compassion, empathy, love etc.
  • Hobbies be it painting, reading, writing, singing, dancing or whatever be that, it develops in children creative thinking. They develop the skill of visualisation and they start generating new ideas.
  • Hobbies also helps in reducing the exposure of children to media like TV, Computers etc which has its own health implications. Hobbies in turn make them physically engaged and help in their motor development and keeping them physically sturdy. Even the indoor hobbies keep their mind fresh and engaged and also include some sort of movements and it also imparts satisfaction in them after each accomplishment.
  • Hobbies like biking, skate boarding and other sport events essentially teach children how to set goals and accomplish them. This process of setting goals in turn helps kids prioritize their tasks and inspire the young minds to reach greater heights.
  • Hobbies develop skills and skills make them ready to compete and competitions provide those challenges. Thus, hobbies prepare kids to face challenges in life with vigour and enthusiasm.
  • Hobbies also teach children time management. Children learn to divide time efficiently for their regular tasks and hobbies. They learn to complete their tasks on time so that they can engage in what they love to do after their work.
  • Hobbies like travelling, debating etc build their social skills.

Hobbies widen the horizon of a child and influence his personality in depths. Hobbies lend hands to the gloomy mind exhausted out of a mundane life. It opens the door to a different world where the child forgets everything else and it’s just imagination, creativity and peace. Hobbies impart the art of patience; inspire to practice; teach the quality of persistence and persuasion and imbibe discipline. So, reach your children at the shore of hobbies and let them swim and dive and come back to go again after their daily responsibilities.
